Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a form of phototherapy using light to activate a photosensitizing protoporphyrin product of the medication, alpha levulanic acid, to release free radical oxygen molecules to bring about specific cell death. PDT is a medical treatment used for treating actinic keratosis, a precancerous skin cancer condition, and some forms of skin cancer. In the case of acne, the action is targeted at overactive sebaceous glands. This treatment kills Propionibacteria in the sebaceous glands, reduces sebum production, and brings about a peel or desquamation. Not only will the acne condition improve, skin texture and color will also improve.
